Course Descriptions
Ø
New
Disaster Volunteer Orientation:
(3 hours) Provides new or potential
disaster volunteers with an
introduction to Red Cross Disaster
Services, an overview of local
disaster volunteer jobs including
Disaster Action Teams, an
explanation of the steps required to
become an authorized disaster
volunteer, and discussion of other
local program activities (meetings,
classes, etc.). Includes online
Introduction to Disaster Services, a
tour of the building and chapter
response supplies/equipment.
Required for all new volunteers.

Fulfilling Our Mission: Translating
Your Compassion Into Community
Action:
(3 hours) Introduces potential
disaster volunteers and members of
other local agencies to the role of
the Red Cross in the community’s
actions in preparing for, responding
to and recovering from emergencies
and disasters.
Required for all volunteers.
Ø
Standard First Aid with CPR/AED -
Adult:
(6 hours) Train lay responders to
overcome any reluctance to act in
emergency situations and to
recognize and care for
life-threatening respiratory or
cardiac emergencies in adults.
Provides the lay responder with the
knowledge and skills necessary in an
emergency to help sustain life and
to minimize pain and the
consequences of injury or sudden
illness until professional medical
help arrives. Required for
all volunteers.

Logistics: An Overview:
(4 hours) Provides participants with
an overview of the Material Support
Services group and the activities
associated with it.
Prerequisite: Fulfilling Our
Mission.
Ø
Logistics Simulation:
(4 hours) Simulation designed to
provide learners with the
opportunity to practice using skills
and knowledge from Logistics: An
Overview. Prerequisite:
Logistics: An Overview.
Ø
Collaborating to Ensure Effective
Service Delivery:
(16 hours) Introduces what a liaison
is and what a liaison does – how
they collaborate with diverse
internal and external stakeholders
to ensure effective service delivery
in a manner that yields community
trust in, appreciation for, and
goodwill toward the American Red
Cross. Prerequisite: Fulfilling
Our Mission.
Ø
Disaster Mental Health: An Overview:
(3 hours) Introduces participants to
ways Disaster Mental Health supports
disaster relief workers and people
affected by disasters. This course
is designed primarily for persons
outside the mental health field who
are involved in Red Cross disaster
response and who wish to better
understand and work more closely
with DMH.
Ø
Emergency Operations Center (EOC) –
Incident Command Liaison:
(8 hours) Prepares Red Cross
employees and volunteers who will be
assigned to government and emergency
settings to work collaboratively
with Red Cross partners, helping to
ensure a coordinated response that
results in effective service
delivery. Prerequisites:
Collaborating to Ensure Effective
Service Delivery as well as
sufficient operations knowledge and
experience to provide a functional
understanding of the concepts,
principles and procedures associated
with disaster assessment,
sheltering, feeding, the provision
of individual assistance and the
basics of operations management
needed to participate adequately in
the discussions and activities
contained in this course.

SCHEDULE
Fourth Quarter, FY 2008
Disaster Volunteer Meetings
Meetings are
held once each month (with the
exceptions of June and December) for
all disaster volunteers and
potential new disaster volunteers.
Attendance at all
meetings is not required; however,
regular attendance is encouraged.
Meetings are held at the Chapter at
940 Grove Road, Greenville, 29605,
in Room 211 (Board Room) unless
otherwise posted.

Disaster Committee Meetings
Disaster
leadership volunteers who are
members of the disaster committee
meet once each month prior to the
Disaster Volunteer Meeting.
